Mary, the sister of Lazarus, did a superb deed for Jesus out of affection for him. She anointed his toes with perfumed oil to provide him consolation. We learn that the “home was crammed with the perfume of the oil.”

Some Christian thinkers have used this passage to replicate on the truth that Christian disciples, like Mary, are referred to as to fill the world with the perfume of their good deeds completed out of our love of Jesus.

Judas mentioned that Mary was being approach too beneficiant. He feigned misery that the cash spent on the oil may have been used for the poor. However Judas was extra involved that he was being denied the cash that might have come to him from the sale of the oil. He held the purse of the apostles’ cash and was identified to generally skim off the highest for his personal wants. He was the other of Mary – Judas wished to take; Mary wished to provide. The Gospel mentioned it plainly, “(Judas) was a thief.” He would quickly promote the lifetime of Jesus for 30 items of silver.

As we transfer by this Holy Week, do not forget that we serve Christ in our love for one another. We should search to provide to God greater than to obtain from others.

Might we be as beneficiant with our love of Jesus as Mary was when she generously anointed him together with her pricey oil. Might we fill the home with the perfume of our worship of God and the consolation given by the nice works we do for others out of affection for Jesus.
